The Press Release reader on the hourly CBC news has just told his audience that the Nobel Price for Economics has been announced. That’s great, except there is no Nobel Prize for Economics. There is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel but that title would likely challenge the reading and verbal skill set of the current CBC Press Release reader.
Simply translating the title the reader could have said the the Swedish Central Bank’s prize for economics. Sticking old Alfred’s name in the title is meant, I think, to attached some of the caché associated with the real Nobel Prizes to the mumble-jumbo now characterized as “economic science”.
I note, but only for interest: The Nobel family dissociates itself from the economics prize,
the curious story of the Nobel Prize for economics,
and, of course, Phillip Mirowski’s interview during the Bretton Woods meeting of the Institute for New Economic Thinking.
